From the early 1990s the majority of Bhutanese refugees resided in the seven UNHCR camps in south eastern Nepal.  An estimated 35,000 settled outside of the camps in India, Nepal and other countries.

Since 2008 a resettlement program has seen over 100,000 Bhutanese refugees move from the camps to start new lives in other countries.  There are communities of Bhutanese refugees scattered all over the world.  2015 figures state that Bhutanese refugees have been resettled in Australia (5,554), Canada (6,500), Denmark (874), New Zealand (327), Norway (566), the United Kingdom (358) and the United States of America (84,819).
